roommates (Reo, Midorima)

[Following this]

Reo is concluding that moving isn't really as much of a hassle as everyone insists it is. As long as you're organized and careful while you're packing and have someone reliable to help you, there's no reason it shouldn't go smoothly.

(Later in life, Reo will realize that only having one bedroom's worth of furniture and possessions also helps. A lot.)

Right now, though, it's all over but the unpacking, and Reo is restraining a sigh as his reliable help leaves after only pausing to rest for a few minutes. He knows by now that Tecchan will never learn how to take care of himself properly, but he still can't resist extracting a promise that Teppei will rest when he gets home, which gets a sheepish agreement that they both know very well is almost a lie.

(Reo never actually says the words I know your knee still bothers you sometimes, but they still hang in the air.)

Once the door is closed, Reo releases that sigh, then goes to the kitchen to retrieve the iced tea he made for them last night. They've both been helping themselves as they've worked, but there's still plenty left.

comments

Birthday party post

((OOC: In celebration of Reo's birthday, here is a party post! Any and all Reos you want to thread with, it can cross RP verses or be part of an RP verse or just outside the verse, and it's low commitment! You can drop it whenever you feel like it. As can I. Also your character doesn't have to have threaded with Reo before, that's what the +1 on the RSVP is for!

Throw up a starter, ping me here or on Plurk to plan something out, whatever works for you.))

comments

soulmates AU #2 (Reo, Kise)

Reo did not spend the night on the futon next to Ryo-chan's bed.

He'd meant to, out of deference to his hosts' preferences, but being so close and yet so far apart had left them both uncomfortable and restless, unable to drift off. Finally, Reo had sat up and said decisively,

"You need to sleep, and it's not as if we're going to do anything inappropriate," and been in Ryo-chan's bed before he'd finished speaking. Curling up with his soulmate, where he was meant to be, had felt like a profound sigh of relief; he'd fallen asleep almost instantly, and he expects that Ryo-chan did, too.

It was easily the best night's sleep Reo has ever had.

(He got up - amidst Ryo-chan's mumbled protests - as soon as the alarm went off, before anyone could find them sharing the bed. Just to be on the safe side.

He's not convinced anyone was fooled.)

Reo called his parents quickly before breakfast, just to touch base with them and let them know he planned to spend the day watching the Winter Cup, and Dad told him they expected the transfer to go through by early afternoon at the absolute latest. He'd been hopeful after Seiko had brought up the possibility last night, but tried to keep himself grounded in the reality of red tape - surely it couldn't be that easy?

But apparently it could.

He decided, after a moment's consideration, not to mention it to Ryo-chan. The newness of their bond will be enough of a distraction from the upcoming game; Reo didn't need to add anything else that might unfocus him further.

A text from Seiko followed almost immediately, announcing that she would be arriving at around the same time he and Ryo-chan will be. They arranged a meeting spot not too far from where Kaijou's locker room will be, so that Ryo-chan could spend an extra minute or two with them before he had to go inside.

Reo had to do a little prodding at first - how on earth did he end up with a soulmate who wasn't a morning person? - but they've arrived on time, and now they're waiting.

comments

first steps (Reo, Riko)

Reo is not late for his first practice with Seirin. It's something of an unintended consequence of the overwhelming series of events over the past few days; he would have been a few minutes late if he had had to take the train from Kirisaki Daiichi, but his parents didn't even consider sending him back to school until the transfer is complete, so he took an earlier train than necessary. The commute from home to Seirin is shorter than the one from home to Kirisaki Daiichi would have been if he hadn't stayed in the dorm there, which is good, because his parents also aren't considering allowing him to stay anywhere except home for the foreseeable future.

(It's meant not as a punishment, but as a reassurance for all of them: for his parents that he's close under their watchful gaze, and for him that. Well. That they still want him around. After what he did.)

(The dorm room was Mako-chan's idea, anyway.)

He half-expects to be yelled at as he enters the gym, or possibly just laughed at, to find out that the whole thing was some kind of hallucination or joke. Neither of those things happens, of course. Reo is earlier than he thought he'd be, and the gym is mostly empty.

Aida Riko is there, though, and Reo grabs on to the obvious protocol with some relief - of course it's appropriate for him to present himself to his new coach.

"Aida-san," he says, bowing as he reaches her.

comments

breakfast of champions (Reo, Haley)

[After this.]

Reo spent extra time on his beauty regimen this morning, contouring and concealing and lining his eyes a touch more heavily than usual, because he didn't exactly get much sleep. He spent the night with the brief but life-changing conversation with Ms Dresden echoing in his head; he gave up on homework early on in favor of questions about magic - how it works, how a person uses it, how common it is.

Around midnight, he focused in on her comments about the Laws, went very still for a moment as several connections came together in his mind, and sat down to make a list of names. He made the list several times over before finally splitting it into categories, eventually putting his pen down with a sigh almost an hour later.

He'd attempted sleep after that, but what little he'd gotten had been broken up by dreams that shoved him back into wakefulness. He gave up at around six and got up to shower and dress. Then, with nothing else to do, he went to Kelly's Diner, arriving nearly half an hour early for his meeting with Ms Dresden.

Now he's sipping coffee restlessly, looking his list over and wondering how complete it is. If any of them know. If any any of them have been seen, might be in trouble, might be in danger.

comments

every little thing (Reo, Mayuzumi)

Reo doesn't make a habit of drinking. Aside from the numerous obvious reasons, booze comes with a ton of hidden calories and Reo is meticulous about his diet; he's allowed treats, yes, but most of his calorie consumption has to be from things that fuel him as an athlete and help maintain his body at its athletic peak.

But it's not every day that Mayuzumi-senpai turns up at Reo's door of his own volition, and he does it even less often with an illicit bottle of wine tucked under his arm (even that, Reo realizes with startled amusement as he all but pulls his senpai into his room, isn't enough to get him noticed), and one must take advantage of opportunities as they arise.

He even brought glasses. They're plastic, unglamorous but sensible, and more than Reo keeps in his spotless dorm room.

Under his other arm was the inevitable light novel, which Reo doesn't give much attention to until the wine is about half gone.

"Were you going to sit outside and read if I wasn't here?" he asks with a little laugh, reaching over to pick the book up for closer inspection. He might not bother normally - he prefers poetry, classic novels, reading with a little bit more depth than the shallowest of kiddie pools - but the cover catches his eye. He wouldn't have thought Mayuzumi the magical girl type.

Reo himself has never been much for any kind of genre entertainment, but how could he possibly miss the appeal of being able to change into a gorgeous outfit with a simple catchphrase? Too bad the rest of it all is so boring.

comments

Soulmates AU (Reo, Kise)

[cont. from here]

After he's given Ryo-chan enough time to leave, Reo leaves too, heading for Rakuzan's locker room. He doesn't know how much of the team will still be there, but he expects that Coach Shirogane will be waiting to hear his decision directly for him, and he also needs to get his bag.

Most of the team has gone - off to lick their wounds, Reo thinks, back in their rooms where they don't have to face anyone but their assigned roommates. Without Ryo-chan here to occupy his attention, the full impact of the loss is beginning to hit him, and what he feels first and forement is guilt. Sei-chan didn't say it directly, but it doesn't take a genius to guess that it was Reo and Ryo-chan finding each other and leaving the court that changed the flow of the game. He'd thought it would be Kaijou that would be crippled without its ace, that Rakuzan would absorb his own departure smoothly and Sei-chan adapt his strategy accordingly, but. Well.

Obviously, that isn't how it happened, is it?

It occurs to Reo to wonder: when was the last time Rakuzan - or Sei-chan - had to adapt to anything? Shirogane warns them frequently of the dangers of complacency, but when was the last time even he had to consider the possibility that Rakuzan could lose? Reo may only be one piece of the machine, but removing him was still enough to make it wobble and crash.

He lost his team this match, this tournament, and now he's leaving them to join the team they lost to.

Standing in this mostly-deserted locker room, without Ryo-chan by his side, it's a lot harder to justify that decision.

He only has a few seconds to dwell on that, though - the room's three remaining occupants all look up when he comes in.

"Reo-nee." Hayama is subdued in a way Reo has never seen before, lacking his customary exclamation points, but he still manages a smile. "Ditch your soulmate already, huh?" Nebuya snorts a little next to him, while Shirogane withdraws into the background to give Reo a moment with his erstwhile teammates.

"Not for long," Nebuya says, "from what Akashi said."

"I'm so sorry," Reo says helplessly; he must look and sound as guilty as he feels, because from there the conversation is mostly the other two trying to reassure him and celebrate his good luck, and Reo's heart aches as he realizes how much he is going to miss them. It's always seemed like they drive him crazy more often than not, Hayama frustratingly careless and Nebuya utterly without shame about his tendencies toward vulgarity, but they've become his friends too, the first friends he'd had among his teammates in a very long time. They haven't showered yet, but for once Reo doesn't care about that, and he hugs them goodbye anyway.

Eventually, Shirogane gently shoos them along to the showers - "He has a soulmate to get back to, you two, you'll understand someday" - and turns to Reo in the quiet of the room.

"I won't keep you long," he says, and smiles a little. "I don't want to take up any more of your first day than I have to. You've made the right decision. We're going to miss you, but Kise-kun wouldn't be a good fit here. I think you understand why."

Reo does understand. Rakuzan has a lot of big personalities on it, a lot of talent, and a lot - not to put too fine a point on it - of ego. It's why he was so relieved when Sei-chan agreed to come to Rakuzan; otherwise, Reo would have been captain, and he knows he doesn't have the right touch to maintain the delicate balance Rakuzan requires to stay functional. Much as Reo loves his soulmate, he can easily admit that the addition of his personality would upset that balance and cause unnecessary waves until Sei-chan could smooth them down.

"It did seem like the best decision for everyone," he says. Then he hesitates, long enough that Shirogane raises an inquiring eyebrow.

". . . How is Sei-chan?" he finally asks. "He seemed . . ." Reo shakes his head a little, unable and unwilling to look for the words he wants.

Shirogane sighs.

*

Sei-chan, as it turns out, does not want Reo's company for the evening.

"It's kind of you to offer," he says, a softness in his expression that Reo can't seem to look away from, "but I'd just spend the whole time feeling guilty about keeping you two apart, and that wouldn't help either of us."

As he has done so often before, Reo has to admit that Sei-chan is right.

"But I'd like it if we could stay in touch," Sei-chan continues.

"Just you try to get rid of me," Reo says, mostly steady. Sei-chan smiles, mostly steady.

*

He sends the text less than an hour after he made the promise.

On my way, Ryo-chan!! Sei-chan gave me your address too, so don't worry about that. I'll see you soon. ♥ ♥ ♥

comments
