Soulmates AU (Reo, Kise)
[cont. from here]
After he's given Ryo-chan enough time to leave, Reo leaves too, heading for Rakuzan's locker room. He doesn't know how much of the team will still be there, but he expects that Coach Shirogane will be waiting to hear his decision directly for him, and he also needs to get his bag.
Most of the team has gone - off to lick their wounds, Reo thinks, back in their rooms where they don't have to face anyone but their assigned roommates. Without Ryo-chan here to occupy his attention, the full impact of the loss is beginning to hit him, and what he feels first and forement is guilt. Sei-chan didn't say it directly, but it doesn't take a genius to guess that it was Reo and Ryo-chan finding each other and leaving the court that changed the flow of the game. He'd thought it would be Kaijou that would be crippled without its ace, that Rakuzan would absorb his own departure smoothly and Sei-chan adapt his strategy accordingly, but. Well.
Obviously, that isn't how it happened, is it?
It occurs to Reo to wonder: when was the last time Rakuzan - or Sei-chan - had to adapt to anything? Shirogane warns them frequently of the dangers of complacency, but when was the last time even he had to consider the possibility that Rakuzan could lose? Reo may only be one piece of the machine, but removing him was still enough to make it wobble and crash.
He lost his team this match, this tournament, and now he's leaving them to join the team they lost to.
Standing in this mostly-deserted locker room, without Ryo-chan by his side, it's a lot harder to justify that decision.
He only has a few seconds to dwell on that, though - the room's three remaining occupants all look up when he comes in.
"Reo-nee." Hayama is subdued in a way Reo has never seen before, lacking his customary exclamation points, but he still manages a smile. "Ditch your soulmate already, huh?" Nebuya snorts a little next to him, while Shirogane withdraws into the background to give Reo a moment with his erstwhile teammates.
"Not for long," Nebuya says, "from what Akashi said."
"I'm so sorry," Reo says helplessly; he must look and sound as guilty as he feels, because from there the conversation is mostly the other two trying to reassure him and celebrate his good luck, and Reo's heart aches as he realizes how much he is going to miss them. It's always seemed like they drive him crazy more often than not, Hayama frustratingly careless and Nebuya utterly without shame about his tendencies toward vulgarity, but they've become his friends too, the first friends he'd had among his teammates in a very long time. They haven't showered yet, but for once Reo doesn't care about that, and he hugs them goodbye anyway.
Eventually, Shirogane gently shoos them along to the showers - "He has a soulmate to get back to, you two, you'll understand someday" - and turns to Reo in the quiet of the room.
"I won't keep you long," he says, and smiles a little. "I don't want to take up any more of your first day than I have to. You've made the right decision. We're going to miss you, but Kise-kun wouldn't be a good fit here. I think you understand why."
Reo does understand. Rakuzan has a lot of big personalities on it, a lot of talent, and a lot - not to put too fine a point on it - of ego. It's why he was so relieved when Sei-chan agreed to come to Rakuzan; otherwise, Reo would have been captain, and he knows he doesn't have the right touch to maintain the delicate balance Rakuzan requires to stay functional. Much as Reo loves his soulmate, he can easily admit that the addition of his personality would upset that balance and cause unnecessary waves until Sei-chan could smooth them down.
"It did seem like the best decision for everyone," he says. Then he hesitates, long enough that Shirogane raises an inquiring eyebrow.
". . . How is Sei-chan?" he finally asks. "He seemed . . ." Reo shakes his head a little, unable and unwilling to look for the words he wants.
Shirogane sighs.

Sei-chan, as it turns out, does not want Reo's company for the evening.
"It's kind of you to offer," he says, a softness in his expression that Reo can't seem to look away from, "but I'd just spend the whole time feeling guilty about keeping you two apart, and that wouldn't help either of us."
As he has done so often before, Reo has to admit that Sei-chan is right.
"But I'd like it if we could stay in touch," Sei-chan continues.
"Just you try to get rid of me," Reo says, mostly steady. Sei-chan smiles, mostly steady.

Or tell him how his parents used the payment from his first big magazine gig as a deposit toward redoing the roof. That's important too, especially when it's over the heads of three children.
Maybe, he decides as he trots up to the house, he won't tell Reocchi that part just yet. But he can show him the magazine!
"Mom! Dad! Guess what happened?" Kise's barely got his shoes off before he's bursting into the living room. His mother looks vaguely alarmed, as though something might have happened to him but once she sees he's in one piece she relaxes, not even standing. His father is more animated, though, casting aside his newspaper and leaning forward.
"You won, right? So it must be something else." His father's always been the more engaged and supportive of his parents, so Kise gravitates naturally toward his chair before setting his bag down.
"I met my soulmate!" Kise glances between his parents, who in turn glance between themselves. Now, of course, his mother is giving him her full attention.
"You met a girl? I hope it was after the game, how else were you able to concentrate?"
Just do it, Ryo-chan, it'll be OK. It's almost like he can hear Reocchi's voice when he replies to his mom. "Wellllll... that's the thing. He's not a girl. We met during the game--I fouled against him but then everything just changed. His name's Mibuchi Reo and he's a shooting guard for Rakuzan and he's going to come to Kaijou!"
From there it's a matter of talking them through everything (including patiently explaining the foul to his mother) and ensuring that it's OK if Reocchi stays with them for the night. He spends extra time explaining more than once that having Reocchi here doesn't mean they're more likely to sleep together. It's possibly the most awkward conversation he's ever had with his parents, but knowing that there's nothing but truth at the heart of it makes it easier. He just wants Reocchi around, preferably always but he's just negotiating for one night.
It's only when his mother makes a comment about the "kinds" of men Kise's around when he's doing modelling work that he finally puts his hands on his hips and frowns. "So, what, it's all right if I'm making money working with gay guys but not if my soulmate is a guy because it means he might be one? Or I might be one?" His reply isn't aggressive, not compared to how he's feeling inside anyway, but it is enough to get his mother to go quiet. His father, though, rises from his chair to put a hand on Kise's shoulder.
"It's all right regardless, Ryota. The only condition is that whatever you two might or might not be feeling, you don't act on it in the house. You're not a child anymore. It's just basic respect for us and your sister." His hand moves from Kise's shoulder to his hair and he ruffles it in a way he hasn't done since Kise told him he made first string at Teikou. "And hey, congratulations. I'm glad you feel comfortable inviting him here, and I'm sure he's great. Of course, not every soulmate can be as great as mine--"
Kise's mother--and his father's soulmate--stands from the sofa with a soft huff and disappears further into the house. Kise and his father both watch her leave, but as Kise starts to wilt, his father affectionately squeezes his shoulder. "She'll come around. Let's see if there's anything to feed this Reocchi of yours."
*
Aneki is the easiest of the three. "Is he good looking?" She's leaning the door of her room with her arms crossed when Kise comes back to start setting things up for Reocchi. Kise can't help but smile.
"Of course. He plays basketball so he's tall and athletic. His hair is long but not at long as Murasakibaracchi's, and it's darker. He has very kind eyes, and fantastic skin. He can probably give you some idea--Hey!"
It's the kick of a sibling to another, carrying all the attendant affection and reprimand in one blow. "But he's gay, right?" Kise stiffens for a moment before she raises one hand in apology. "I was listening but I didn't want to come out and make things more complicated."
After a moment to determine her sincerity, Kise shrugs. His sisters have never been basketball fan but they've both always been Ryota fans and he shouldn't have expected anything different now. "People say so but I don't care. Why, are you going to try to seduce my soulmate? Aneki, are you that desperate?"
This time, he dodges and stays behind his doorframe. "Just let me know when he gets here!" With that, Kise Reiko, oldest child of the family by six minutes, returns to her own room. Kise doesn't move until he hears her on her phone, though. Safety first.
He's laying out a futon and trying to decide just how close to his own bed to put it when Reocchi's text comes through. OK, Reocchiiiiiii ♥ ♥ ♥~! I'll be waiting, and there's food if you want it (∩❛ڡ❛∩)

But in the end, he does decide to call, because they'll want to know this as soon as possible, and because the sooner they can contact Rakuzan and Kaijou high schools about the transfer, the better.
He's going to save Skyping Seiko for when he gets to Ryo-chan's, though; she'll want to "meet" him immediately and will just huff at Reo for not waiting until she could.
He calls his mother first, and she immediately calls his father to patch him into a conference call, so he is at least able to tell them both at once. Neither of them is at all surprised that his soulmate is a (beautiful) boy and a basketball player; he opts to save the explanation of the nature of his bond with Ryo-chan until he's gotten more of a handle on it himself. It's not immediately important anyway, since it's not their home he and Ryo-chan will be sleeping in tonight, and once he does understand it better, he'll be able to explain clearly why it's really okay for Ryo-chan to sleep in his room and not the guest room.
His parents reminisce fondly about their own first meeting for a few minutes - Reo has heard the story before, but now that he's experienced his first meeting, he can understand it in a way that makes it seem brand new - before they have to get off the phone and get back to work. Dad says he'll contact the schools before the day is out, and both of them admit that they'll be happy to have him close to home again. "Rakuzan was a wonderful opportunity and you were so happy there," Mom says, easily falling into the past tense, "but we've missed you. And such a lovely reason to come home!"
"We'll get them to put that transfer through as soon as possible," Dad promises. "You'll be amazed how fast that can go when it's a soulmate situation."
So Reo hangs up happy, glad he told them right away instead of waiting until he could see them in person, and sits through the rest of the really excessively long cab ride with growing impatience. Talking about Ryo-chan has rekindled the need to see him as soon as possible.
When the cab finally, finally pulls up, Reo can't get out of it fast enough, probably overtips the driver in his haste, and is at the door knocking within a minute.

He pops up immediately when the headlights stop out front instead of cruising past, but he restrains himself from running out to meet Reocchi on the way up. As he's hovering, though, there's a sound behind him. When he turns, his parents are there. Both of them, much to Kise's relief. His mother's smile doesn't quite reach her eyes (which are themselves a little red) and she's squeezing his father's hand until her knuckles are white, but she's there and that counts for a lot for Kise. With his free hand his father gives him a thumbs up and Kise just grins.
Before he has a chance to say anything to them, there's a knock at the door. "Reocchi!" Kise's to the door in a step and a half, swinging it wide and just about bouncing on the balls of his feet. Behind him is a tastefully decorated home with a large, airy living room visible down the hall. The floors are hardwood and to one side a staircase can be seen. "I'm so glad you could come!"
Has it really only been less than two hours? Because with the way Kise's dragging Reocchi in for a hug, it may as well have been two years.
no subject
"So am I." He's so grateful to Sei-chan right now, for recognizing that keeping Reo with him wouldn't be as good for either of them as it would have been before the bond (which already seems so long ago); he was more right than he can really know.
(Reo hopes Sei-chan finds his soulmate soon, too. He needs that, someone who can take better care of him than anyone else in the world would be able to.)
He lingers in the hug longer than is really polite. Contrary to common belief, he is in fact aware of the other people in the room, and of the fact that he should disengage so that Ryo-chan can make introductions and he can thank them properly for their hospitality.
He hopes, under the circumstances, that they'll understand.
no subject
Kise's also aware that his parents are there, but there's a long standing knowledge between them that Kise is somewhat... demonstrative at times, so the idea that hugging another boy like this in their front doorway might be testing either their patience or their modesty isn't even remotely on his mind. He'd be perfectly content to spend the rest of the evening here, except that Reocchi's still sort of technically outside.
Finally, he does step back, though he also catches one of Reocchi's hands as he does so. "Come in! Mom! Dad! This is Mibuchi Reo, my soulmate. Reocchi, these are my parents, Kise Nobu and Hoshi." His mother's face has turned passive but his father, while looking a little startled, is still smiling. Kise squeezes Reocchi's hand once when he sees, just as reassurance.
no subject
He bows and says,
"Thank you very much for your hospitality, especially on such short notice. I'm very pleased to have your son as my soulmate."
It's the appropriate thing to say, with the added bonus of being not just polite, but also one of the truest things he has ever said.
no subject
He lets go of Reocchi's hand when his soulmate bows, taking the time to watch his parents' reaction. His father puffs up a little, clearly pleased at the display of respect from Reocchi, but then he also looks at Kise's mother. Her chest rises and falls with a deep, slow breath, but her shoulders also begin to creep down on the exhale. It's a change Kise's seen before--she reacted the same way the first time she met Kuroko.
This time, though, there will be no graduating and moving to different high schools. To Kise, that means they'll have that much more time to work this out, but he also knows his mother and Reocchi are likely to see things differently than that.
"Yes, thank you for letting Reocchi stay." Kise also bows, though not as deeply or for nearly as long. When he lifts his head, his father is stepping forward, one hand reached out to beckon them both in.
"We're glad to have you, Mibuchi-kun, and looking forward to getting to know you. Please, come on in. Have you eaten?"
no subject
(He wishes more than ever that they'd found each other during that middle school game. He could have used it then, the feeling that there's nothing he can't handle with Ryo-chan in his life.)
He smiles in response to Ryo-chan's father's question as he removes his shoes, saying,
"No, I'm afraid there hasn't been time."
And that he'd sort of forgotten what food was. But now he remembers, and his body reminds him that he's played half a game and a full one-on-one since his last meal, and suddenly he's starving.
no subject
"Daaaaaad!" Kise's slowly been wilting the longer his father's been talking and he just can't stand it anymore. He's waiting for his father to start reciting house specials at this point and that's just too embarrassing. Parents.
His mother stays at the edge of the genkan as Kise starts to follow his father into the house, watching them go without speaking. Finally, just at the two Kise men have passed her, she breaks the silence. "Welcome, Mibuchi-kun. Please make yourself at home. However, I'm sorry, I'm feeling under the weather. If you will excuse me." With a slight bow, Kise Hoshi retreats up the stairs.
Kise sighs and bumps his shoulder against Reocchi's. "It's better like this for now. She's just stubborn." He says it as though it's a disappointing aspect to her and not the root of his own capacity for digging his heels in until shaken loose by force.
Luckily, Kise is the product of two parents, and while his resistant streak is maternal, his chatty nature is one hundred percent from his father. "I know it's not the healthiest and we do usually try to do better, but Ryota could eat just about anything and probably be fine, I think! High school athletes and their metabolism." There are two plates set out on trays on the kitchen counter, still steaming just a little--he was cooking until just a couple of moments before Reocchi's arrival.
"You can eat down here if you want, or take everything upstairs if that's preferable. I won't make you two hang out down here with me." Kise Nobu also has his son's cheerful energy and--while his presentation is more mature than Kise's--he radiating it now. For his part, the youngest Kise looks at Reocchi.

- but so far, the only time he's really had alone with Ryo-chan has been the one-on-one, and while that was amazing and something he definitely wants to do again, it didn't involve much talking. With the option presented to him, he finds now that he wants to be alone with his soulmate as soon as possible.
But he was brought up to be polite -
(and he knows what it will look like, and just because Ryo-chan's father is acting more accepting than his mother doesn't mean he isn't aware of it)
- and now he's hesitated for far too long and thought himself into knots and doesn't know what to say at all. Ugh.
no subject
"Go on, both of you. There will be plenty of time to get to know Mibuchi-kun, and, well." He leans forward and his voice takes on a slightly conspiratorial tone. "I should really check on my wife."
"Oh, god, Dad, gross." With that Kise starts to go, then pauses with a quiet sound of disappointment--with both hands full, he can't actually drag Reocchi along with him. So much for his dramatic huffy exit! Ruined by his father's thoughtful cooking. "Come on, Reocchi, let's go before he says something weirder."
"I didn't mean anything like that, Ryota!"
"Not listening!" And he's really not. He's on his way out of the kitchen, hovering in wait for his soulmate. Even though he knows his father didn't actually mean anything lascivious with his comment, pretending he did does make for an easier exit. "Ooh, Reocchi, can you grab the drinks?"
no subject
. . . he stays absolutely out of the conversation that follows, more than a little amazed by it. He can imagine talking that way with Seiko, but not with his parents. They'd consider it more than a little disrespectful.
Kise-san doesn't seem offended, though, which is something else to be a little relieved by, and all in all Reo is more than happy to pick up the glasses Ryo-chan mentions, thank Kise-san for the meal, and follow his soulmate out of the kitchen.
no subject
Kise himself, of course, is long gone and halfway up the stairs already--he has a slightly more pressing matter on his mind. "Aneki! Come meet Reocchi!"
When Reocchi does join Kise on the stairs, he'll see a somewhat familiar face peering out of the room on the right--familiar but framed with longer hair and having somewhat more delicate features. The look of bright, almost feline curiosity is the same, though.
"Mibuchi Reo, this is Kise Reiko, one of my sisters. Aneki, this is Reocchi, my soulmate! So be nice!" There's no real weight behind the demand, though, and all it earns is a glance at Kise's back as he's heading into his room.
"I think it would be nicer if you at least let him put his things down before starting introductions, Ryo-chan." The nickname is dripping with the exasperation only an older sibling can muster, but then she turns her attention to Reocchi. "Do you need a hand?"
no subject
(She probably would have found the exchange downstairs hilarious.)
Reo smiles at Ryo-chan's sister, saying,
"I'm fine, thank you. It's nice to meet you. I'm Mibuchi Reo. Your name is very close to my sister's; she's Seiko."
It's a more casual introduction than he'd normally be happy with, but somehow it seems to fit.
no subject
"It's nice to meet you too, Mibuchi-kun. Welcome to our home. I hope you're comfortable here." Reiko bows a little--Kise's tendency to not let anything get too formal isn't his alone but she can also tell that his soulmate seems kind of overwhelmed. Of course, this is probably all a lot to take in regardless. "Really? What a coincidence! It should make things easier in terms of remembering names, at least until you meet my sister."
Kise's eyes are moving between the two of them as though it's a tennis match but it's also way more fun because he doesn't have a side to root for. That is, until Reiko looks straight at him. "You were right, Ryo-chan. He's very good looking. Probably too good for you, even." She smiles conspiratorially at Reocchi while shrugging.
"Aneki!!!!!" Suddenly he's absolutely rooting against Reiko in this tennis match, but mostly Kise wants the floor to open up and swallow him. Rude!
no subject
"Ryo-chan," he says, handing his soulmate the glasses he's carrying to distract him. He's smiling at Reiko's remark, but the smile is full of affection for Ryo-chan rather than amusement at his expense.
"I was worried my sister might be a bit much for you, but I think you'll do fine."
no subject
"Too much for me? There hasn't been a girl yet who is too much for me!"
Across the hall, Reiko just tilts her head and drums her fingers on one arm. "Not even one? I can think of two."
"Aneki, you and Nee-san don't count." He pouts and turns his head toward Reocchi a little. "There are two of them. They're twins and they're both horrible to me but at least Nee-san had the decency to move out."
no subject
"I'm going to do you a favor," he says, "and not tell Nee-chan you said that. She'd take it as a challenge."
Then, to Reiko: "I think you two will get along well, and your sister too."
Which, since a soulmate bond can bring together families as well as the bonded pair, pleases Reo immensely. He wants them all to get along, to like each other, to be glad that his and Ryo-chan's bond drew them into each others' lives.
(He avoids thinking about Ryo-chan's mother for the moment.)
no subject
Reiko just laughs. "I don't even know Mibuchi-san and I don't think you'd win. She does sound like someone I'd get along with, though. I'm already looking forward to meeting her." Her face and tone are absolutely genuine. Anyone involved in ganging up on Kise, especially another girl and Kise's soulmate's older sister, sounds like someone she wants to know better.
"You see what I have to put up with, Reocchi? So mean." Kise's life is suffering.
no subject
Not that that has ever, ever stopped Reo. As one might expect of a family of athletes, the Mibuchis are a naturally competitive bunch.
He leans his forehead lightly against Ryo-chan's for a moment.
"Well, now you have me." He leaves the second half of the sentence unspoken: And I will always be on your side. Some things don't need to be said aloud, especially not in front of sisters who clearly know who to make best use of every scrap of ammunition they come across.
no subject
Not even the implication that Reocchi might decide to murder him is enough to make Kise pout again now, though. He's quietly basking in the touch of Reocchi's forehead. As soon as Reiko's gone he grabs at Reocchi's hand to tug him into his room. "Come on!"
Kise's room is the smallest in the house so the majority of it is taken up with his bed, the futon, a generous wardrobe at the end of the bed and a desk/dressing table in the last corner. There are trophies from multiple sports on or near the desk but, on closer examination, none of them are for more than one year until the ones from Teikou. Beside them are a few skin care items and a magazine or two--Zunon Boy is there, naturally. The furniture itself is nice but not extravagant, though his bedding and, by extension, the futon and bedding for that, are very nice. When Kise splurges, he does it very particularly.
"I only have the one chair, but you can have it if you want. I don't mind the floor!"
no subject
. . . then, innocently: "Or to feed each other."
Sisters can be contagious.
no subject
"Not you too, Reocchi!" Pout pout pout, drink, pout pout.
no subject
"I'm sorry, I couldn't help myself. I'm not very good at resisting an easy set-up." Especially when it's been handed to him on a silver platter.
"Is it okay if we Skype Seiko after dinner? I didn't call her in the cab because I knew she'd want to be able to see you for herself."
no subject
"Of course! I wish there was some way we could meet her in person but I know it's late. Ryoko's probably already asleep, she has a lot of early classes, but we can try to get in touch with her tomorrow." Kise's fairly sure Reiko will tell her between then and now, but there's no point in trying to keep it a secret. He changed his Facebook status on the way over and everything. Still single, but officially soulmated.
