every little thing (Reo, Mayuzumi)

Reo doesn't make a habit of drinking. Aside from the numerous obvious reasons, booze comes with a ton of hidden calories and Reo is meticulous about his diet; he's allowed treats, yes, but most of his calorie consumption has to be from things that fuel him as an athlete and help maintain his body at its athletic peak.

But it's not every day that Mayuzumi-senpai turns up at Reo's door of his own volition, and he does it even less often with an illicit bottle of wine tucked under his arm (even that, Reo realizes with startled amusement as he all but pulls his senpai into his room, isn't enough to get him noticed), and one must take advantage of opportunities as they arise.

He even brought glasses. They're plastic, unglamorous but sensible, and more than Reo keeps in his spotless dorm room.

Under his other arm was the inevitable light novel, which Reo doesn't give much attention to until the wine is about half gone.

"Were you going to sit outside and read if I wasn't here?" he asks with a little laugh, reaching over to pick the book up for closer inspection. He might not bother normally - he prefers poetry, classic novels, reading with a little bit more depth than the shallowest of kiddie pools - but the cover catches his eye. He wouldn't have thought Mayuzumi the magical girl type.

Reo himself has never been much for any kind of genre entertainment, but how could he possibly miss the appeal of being able to change into a gorgeous outfit with a simple catchphrase? Too bad the rest of it all is so boring.

He probably doesn't come off as the magical boy type, either.

"Thought about it."

It's a series he's just started to read, and from what he's seen so far it's every bit as ridiculous as it looks. Leaning against the side of Reo's bed, he closes his eyes and enjoys the relaxing warmth from the alcohol. It occurs to him that two glasses might be his limit. He feels comfortably buzzed as it is already.

"You don't care if I stay over, do you?"

. . . Oh. Now that Reo is actually looking at the cover . . .

"These are boys."

He had no idea that was even a thing! Maybe he should be paying more attention to light novels after all.

"Hm?" He looks up, blinking (smiling), replaying Mayuzumi's question in his mind. "Oh. No, that's fine."

Well, he's hardly going to kick Mayuzumi out in this state, is he? And if anyone gives Reo trouble for having an unauthorized overnight guest, they can say they were strategizing. The importance of the basketball team will override any objections.

"You're the last person I want to hear any shit from."

Yeah, he's defensive. He's used to them making fun of him for what he reads. Boys in pastels with magical love powers doing the bidding of a pink wombat isn't something he'd show up to practice with.

Reo looks up, startled expression quickly turning into a frown.

"I'm the last person who would give you any," he says, more sharply than he'd meant to. "I was actually thinking of asking if I could borrow it when you're done."

He was thinking no such thing, but now he's said it - well, he wouldn't mind. Not in this specific instance. Boys in pretty clothes is something Reo can always use more of in his life.

"... Really?"

Mayuzumi's annoyance is deflated before it could even really get started, and his expression shifts to mild surprise. He knew the sort of stuff Reo liked to read and this was nothing like it. He also feels a little guilty for jumping to conclusions, and doesn't realize his face is much easier to read when he's had a couple glasses of wine.

"Sorry. I guess I just..." He stops there and gives his head a bit of a shake. "Of course you can borrow it."

He does read the guilt on Mayuzumi's face easily, and looks sheepish in response, because okay. It isn't like Mayuzumi has no reason at all to expect Reo to look down on his taste in reading material, considering that Reo has done more of exactly that than is truly appropriate when it comes to his behavior toward his senpai. He mostly keeps his comments to himself, but he's still managed to make his disdain for Mayuzumi's light novels abundantly clear.

"No, I don't blame you," he says hurriedly. "I haven't always been polite about your books. I apologize. I'll try harder in the future."

. . . which he immediately undermines by continuing: "This looks more interesting than your usual stuff, anyway."

Well. He tried?

"I didn't realize you were into pink wombats."

He has a pretty good idea about what it is that really caught Reo's attention. There's no way in hell he'd be caught by any of the others on their team reading this series. With Reo though, it had almost felt like he'd been bringing along bait.

Turning more toward the other boy, Mayuzumi gave him a critical look that moved slowly over Reo's form. Sure he was tall, and way more muscular than the guys in the novel, but...

"You could probably pull off that outfit they get stuck in, you know."

Reo flushes a little under the other boy's scrutiny, but makes no effort to avoid it.

Then it's his turn to return it, watching Mayuzumi cautiously for a few seconds to be sure he isn't being mocked (he doesn't think he is, but experience has taught him to be careful of comments like that) before he smiles and says,

"Do you think so, senpai?"

(Of course he could.)

"Hm... Maybe not the shorts. Those would still look pretty silly."

Mayuzumi could give Reo shit the way he'd been on the receiving end so many times before now, but they weren't on the court anymore. Getting in a dig like that now would be more cruel than he'd like, and he really did mean his comment to be a simple complement, not a back-handed one.

Mayuzumi's instincts are sounder than he may know: a dig like that now, right after Reo has made the deliberate choice to trust him, would result in him on the other side of the door and some indeterminate but lengthy amount of time before Reo would willingly speak to him again.

As it is, though, Reo puts down the book to stretch lazily, arching his back.

"Mm. I'd absolutely have to have a skirt."

He'd look better in it than any of those shoujo twigs would, too. It isn't just build; it's also confidence and carriage and skill.

Though having the legs for it (which just about any serious basketball player does, in Reo's considered opinion) doesn't hurt, either.

"A skirt?"

Mayuzumi's voice went up an octave, and he clears his throat before taking a quick sip of wine to try to cover it. He hadn't ever had reason to imagine Reo in something like that before and thinking of it now with the boy right in front of him...

"I was thinking of a suit."

His face was probably as heated-looking as it felt.

Reo blinks, caught off guard; he'd thought he and Mayuzumi were on the same page. The surprise passes quickly, though, in favor of his interest in Mayuzumi's reaction.

"What's the point of that?" he asks, casually reaching for the wine bottle to top his glass up a little bit. "I can wear a suit any day. I don't get to wear skirts that often."

Glass back to half-full, he puts the bottle down and smiles at his senpai.

"The last time was the maid and butler café my class did for the school festival last year. I brought my own dress. It was fun."

Fun doesn't really cover the joy Reo got from the opportunity to openly wear a dress and be as feminine as he wanted and have it treated like the appropriate thing for him to do instead of something weird and creepy, but he doesn't want to get into all of that now. There's something else here that he's chasing.

"I must have missed it. That sounds like something I wouldn't have forgotten very easily."

Maybe he'd been busy with his own class; he'd been particularly useful in a haunted house. Reo does seem like the type to be able to wear something feminine without any shame at all. With his whole attitude toward it, it had probably looked better than he can imagine. Well, except he isn't so sure about one thing...

"Wouldn't our legs be too muscular to wear that sort of stuff and still look good?"

"I can be very difficult to forget when I put my mind to it," Reo murmurs against the rim of his glass, just before he takes a slow sip, lips lingering on the plastic.

Mayuzumi's question makes him laugh, a comfortable and confident sound.

"Not at all! It all depends on your definition of looking good. The idea isn't to pass as female, it's to flaunt what you have."

It's his turn to take an evaluating look now, his gaze moving thoughtfully up the length of Mayuzumi's legs.

"You could certainly pull it off, senpai." Yeah, he didn't miss the our in that question.

"What? Noooo, no, definitely not."

If Mayuzumi were able to think more clearly, he'd realize his slip. He'd meant it more in a general way, because basketball had toned their legs and given them quite a bit of muscle. He certainly couldn't imagine someone like Nebuya flaunting anything well in clothes like the boys in his novel wore, or if he tried to wear women's clothing period.

Being the one under scrutiny and knowing that Reo is probably picturing him in one or both is embarrassing. Mayuzumi has to take a drink to steady himself, and ends up nearly emptying his glass. It isn't that he doesn't think he has anything to flaunt. He simply doesn't think he'd look anything but ridiculous if he wore something normally worn by women.

Reo holds the bottle out to him, giving him an arch look.

"Are you questioning my expertise, Mayuzumi-senpai?"

Mayuzumi isn't the only one feeling the wine. A fully sober Reo would, at the very least, phrase the question more politely.

"Of course I am. You're drunk."

Not that he isn't too—possibly even a little more than Reo is. That doesn't stop him from automatically holding out his cup for a refill when Reo offers. They really should have considered food with the wine, or at least water. Mayuzumi likes to think he's still more or less as discerning as he'd normally be though. For instance, he knows better than to attempt to go out and rectify the food problem while he's like this.

Reo makes what is absolutely not an inelegant snorting sound as he refills Mayuzumi's glass, a touch unsteadily.

"I still know what I'm talking about. You think this is the first time I've thought about this?"

It's a hobby of his, creating outfits for people he knows, and he doesn't bother to stay to one side or the other of the gender line while he does it. What's the fun in limiting himself?

"Wait... You've been mentally dressing me?"

Didn't people usually tend to do the opposite? Mayuzumi isn't sure what to think about this. On the one hand, at least this means Reo's fantasies about him were probably tame. On the other... He isn't sure whether not he should be disappointed about that or not.

Reo smiles at him.

"Sometimes," he says. "There are so many things you would look good in."

He may or may not have missed the point Mayuzumi was getting at. He'll never tell. (Unless he does.)

"... Like what, exactly?"

[He's suspicious of course, but not maliciously so. It'd be stupid to say Reo didn't have a sense of style. Mayuzumi was even half-sure Reo was responsible for some of the things Akashi wore. He hadn't seen that orange hoodie in ages, for instance.]

Sei-chan is not unwilling to have his clothing choices corrected, as long as the new alternatives are easily procured and don't take away from time spent on his many responsibilities. Which, honestly, is better than Reo expected the first time he approached their captain on the issue.

Reo ponders Mayuzumi's question for a moment, then brightens and stands up, only wobbling a little. He puts his glass down . . . somewhere . . . heading for his dresser.

"Like . . ." he says, opening the top drawer to pull something out, "like these!" He tosses something black and neatly folded to Mayuzumi; it comes partly unraveled as it flies through the air, revealing itself to be a pair of sheer black stockings.

"You've got to be kidding."

They're awfully flimsy, he thinks. Soft, too. Definitely not the sort of thing he'd been expecting to discover his teammate had been imagining him in. That it hadn't been a skirt or some sort of more intimate clothing was a relief.

Realizing he'd actually been contemplating what it would be like to wear something like them, Mayuzumi felt his face color and quickly took another drink of his wine.

"I'd probably rip right through these."

Reo is still searching for something in his dresser; when he looks up to take in Mayuzumi's reaction, though, he decides that a garter belt might be pushing it a little too far right now.

(Maybe later.)

Instead, he gets out a pair of simple sock garters, designed to hold the stockings up by wrapping directly around the tops of them instead of being clipped to them.

"They're stronger than they look," he says, matter-of-fact. "I would have to show you how to put them on, though."

This was putting him in a hard position. Should he let Reo feel up his legs in the name of fashion, or be stubborn about it and risk ripping them like he fears? The latter option is tempting, because surely he can manage to be careful enough... But he's also drunk and if he does screw up Reo's stockings, he'll probably have to go buy him another pair. Mayuzumi isn't ready for going out to buy stockings for another guy.

The expressions he's making throughout this thought process probably look like a reaction to the garters in Reo's hand; admittedly, he's not familiar with those, either. His own clothes don't normally include excessive straps.

"... Fine, but only because I'm not buying you new ones if they rip anyway."

He should probably set his glass down if he's going to get up, he realizes. Putting on stockings (why was he doing this again?) means having to take off his pants, and taking off his pants means having to get up—

He abruptly sits back down, this time on the bed, when he realizes the wine may have been stronger than he'd realized.
